about

You may remember Doug Polgardy as the drummer from the seminal noise rock trio Air Conditioning, but Doug's new work as sonic alchemist behind Check Engine Palace is almost worlds apart from his days turning ear drums inside out. This tape is one of the most difficult to classify releases I've come across in recent years. It starts with an almost unsettlingly intimate field recording, which is soon enveloped by a minimalist, detuned church organ sounding riff. Another harmonically discordant layer comes in, and it begins to feel as though Ross Perot may have been right about aliens landing in his backyard. The second track starts with a minimal high pitched lfo, and a gurgly track in the background that sounds like a tape machine struggling, this fades into the final track. The last piece on side A sounds like a ballet recital taking place on a pile of crushed beer cans. The rhythmic, fried out synth sounds close out side A. Side B starts with analog synthy thickness, that at first reminds me of Telecult Powers. The mothership has taken off, we are off to forbidden planets. It's 2am and I only have until dawn brings us back to a rhythmic place, with what sounds like a tape loop of either a train passing or a dog breathing heavily. The synth sounds in the background remain spacey, if somewhat more industrial. Taken as a whole, Check Engine Palace is both minimalist in approach and strangely complex. This is one of those recordings that has me intriguingly scratching my head, wondering how certain sounds are created, the way perhaps only Aaron Dilloway or Twig Harper have in the past.
